This week, Rang a Trí made lava lamps while investigating what happens when oil is added to water.
We discovered that oil and water do not mix; they separate because water is more dense than oil.
Next, we added food colouring and watched as it dropped down through the oil and mixed with the water.
Finally, we added an effervescent tablet and watched as our lava lamps came to life! The tablet sank to the bottom of the bottle and reacted with the water to produce carbon dioxide bubbles.
We really enjoyed this experiment and we did a great job at following all of the steps in the investigation!
