During their STEM class this week, the boys and girls in Rang 2 were studying the Strand of forces and magnetism. After learning the basic concepts of magnetism, they set about making a car that could be moved by a magnet. Collaboration was very important as minds got together to create the perfect vehicle.
3rd and 4th classes went to the University of Limerick for their school tour on Thursday, May 26th. Despite the rain, spirits were high and an action-packed day ensured that all were well ready for a bite to eat at the Barack Obama Plaza on the way home. After a short history lesson, food and drink was consumed and wishes were expressed to do it all again in 5th and 6th!
On Saturday 21st May, 2nd class celebrated their First Holy Communion. Fr Ciprian celebrated the Mass where 22 boys and girls received their First Communion. Pupils from 3rd-6th class provided beautiful singing which enhanced the ceremony. Many thanks to Louise Kavanagh for leading the choir.
After the ceremony the Parents’ Association hosted a party in the GAA clubhouse. This was a great success and gave the boys and girls time to chat and have some fun. Many families came and it was lovely to hear the buzz back in the community. It really made the day special for the boys and girls of 2nd class. Many thanks to all the parents who helped out on the day, dropped sandwiches and treats and for setting up the night before. Your help is really appreciated.
A special thanks to Ms. Michelle O’ Byrne and Ms. Pauline Dunne for preparing the children for their First Holy Communion.
Thank you to the GAA club for the use of the clubhouse on the day. It truly is a great facility to have in the community. Photographer Denis Byrne was there to capture the family photos along with Videographer John Brophy who recorded the ceremony as a keepsake for families.
Nadia Tavolieri surprised us all on the day with a fabulous cake. She has recently set up her business of D’Laois Cakes. Thank you for the delicious cake, Nadia!
On Saturday last, May 21st, the boys and girls from Rang 2 gathered together with their families to celebrate the Sacrament of the Eucharist in the Church of the Holy Cross in Ratheniska. Fr Ciprian welcomed the congregation and guided the children through the ceremony. Thank you to Fr Ciprian for officiating, to Brian and Caroline for the Readings and Prayers of the Faithful, to Fr Theo for his assistance during the ceremony, to the pupils from 3rd to 6th for their wonderful singing under the leadership of Louise and Ms Dunne and, of course, to Mrs O’Byrne for preparing the children for their special day.
After the ceremony, the Parents’ Association treated everyone to refreshments in the GAA Clubhouse. Head over to the Parents’ Association page for more!
On Friday the 20th May we held a very successful Jersey Day in Ratheniska NS. Many club and county jerseys were on display on the day. Thank you to all the parents for their generous donations and we are delighted to inform you we raised €1561.92. This funding will be used to cover events between now and the end of the school year. Check out a photo of some of the jerseys here.
Towards the end of the day, and in the presence of the entire school community and staff, we held a raffle and we were very lucky to have some sporting celebrities in attendance on the day to help out.
Representing their clubs were Enda Shortall, Kieran Lillis, Enda Rowland, Jamie Baldwin and Gareth Dillon who presented the winners with their prizes.
The prizes included vouchers for Roll ‘n’ Bowl, Kirsten’s Cakery, Pippa’s Parlour, McDonalds, Supermacs, wine from Peig’s Bar and Bracken’s Gala, chocolates, doughnuts and a fruit hamper. The prizes were well shared out among the classes and staff and we would like to thank sincerely all those who organised and sponsored them.
There was great excitement among all the children on the day and thanks to all the lads for coming and inspiring the boys and girls in Ratheniska NS.

The excitement of getting on a bus with our friends was palpable on Wednesday, May 18th as Junior and Senior Infants headed off to Castleview Farm in Cullohill. We had such a lovely time feeding the animals, going through the maze, driving go-carts, using our imagination in the play areas and generally being together for our first ever school tour!
The first school tour since pre covid times was eagerly awaited by the boys and girls in 1st and 2nd classes. Excitement levels were high as we boarded the bus to take us to Lullymore Heritage Park. On our arrival, we were whisked off to meet Dolly the Sheep and Dali the Alpaca , Heather the Kerry Bog Pony, Peaches and Silver the Fallabella Horses and many more furry friends. We went on a train ride through a variety of landscapes – through the park’s ancient woodlands and the stunning peatland and lake areas. The play areas and a round of crazy golf completed our perfect day! Click on the picture to see what we got up to!
Hurling training for 3rd-6th classes has been taking place weekly this term. Under the watchful eye of David Larkin, the boys and girls are learning the basic skills of hurling and many have their eye on the county team already!
