Partnering Children on their Developmental Journey

Snowtime!

Ratheniska

On our return to school after the unseasonal falls of snow, Junior Infants decided to bring some snow indoors and create mini snow characters before setting off down the road to see how high the snow really was. We discovered that it was even taller than 1st Class who also ventured out in the cold to examine it!

Back to School!

Ratheniska

And so… the Ratheniska community have come up trumps once again! Some local men (all past pupils) got out and cleared the roads so that we can safely return to school tomorrow, Monday 5th March.

We are delighted to say that Sparky and Ginger (our resident goldfish for the last 12 years) survived without the care and attention of Junior Infants!

With Mother’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day and Easter all coming in the next few weeks, we will, no doubt, be extremely busy!

Emma and the Beast!

Ratheniska

As we sit at home and listen to updates from the National Emergency Committee about how to stay safe from the “Beast from the East” and Storm Emma, we can be safe in the knowledge that even though we are not in school, we can learn lots from the safety of our homes!

Some ideas:-

  • What countries are East of Ireland? Where is the Bay of Biscay?
  • How many birds can we name that are in our gardens? What can we do to help them?
  • Read a book- Don’t forget that today is World Book Day – The author, Tatiana Feeney, who was supposed to visit our school today will now come at a later date.
  • Take some photos- they will be memories in years to come when our children will have them to show to their children!
  • Send your photos to ratheniskakids@gmail.com so we can see the fun you’ve had in the snow.

Keep warm and safe.

Engineers and Parachutes!

Ratheniska

In Third Class, we have been learning about forces and how we can resist forces, gravity and friction. With this in mind, we put our engineering skills to use and created vehicles using wheels and axles. We even made parachutes and tested them out to see which ones would safely land an egg!!

Lighting up in Rang 4!

Ratheniska

In Rang 4, we have been learning about how circuits work in electricity. First, we practised how to make a light circuit on our own. Next, we used recyclable materials to design and construct lighthouses complete with switches to power them on and off. We got a great thrill when our lighthouses lit up and we are looking forward to our next science experiment over the next few weeks.
